What is professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity insurance is designed to help cover you for the cost associated with any legal proceedings that might occur as a result of a client being unsatisfied with your advice or services. In some cases, clients will only choose to work with you if you have this insurance as it can signify your business has covered risks associated with their project. 

Why do I need professional indemnity insurance?

This type of insurance is designed to protect you should you suffer a legal claim from a client. This could be in relation to the client being unhappy with the work performed or because there is a financial loss as a result of delays in a project or because other problems have arisen. A claim would normally be made if a breach of your professional duty was considered to have occurred. 

What type of claims do building designers have?

There are many circumstances which might lead to a claim. These can cover anything from copyright breaches to dimensioning errors, dishonest staff, lack of detailing, loss of documentation, errors in documents,  incorrect specification and the failure of the buildings to perform as designed. 

In many cases, accusations are made against more than one party involved in the building project, which may have little substance, but still require investigation and defence by the insurer to protect both your and their interests
